Life at St Margaret’s

Pupils joining from overseas are immersed in the traditions and excellence of a British education. With our small classes, specialist teaching, outstanding extra-curricular opportunities in 27-acres of green space, each pupil is known and nurtured as an individual.

As well as day places, we offer boarding options in Years 5 and 6 (ages 9 to 11 years). These are intended for girls who plan to move up to St Mary’s Calne, our senior school, which is one of the UK’s leading boarding and day schools for girls. Our Year 5 and 6 boarders attend school at St Margaret’s and board with St Mary’s Lower School House.

The admissions journey

Our Admissions Team will guide families with clarity and care through each step of the admissions process. We encourage international families to visit the school.

The admissions process for international pupils often begins with the UKiset test, taken independently and sent directly to us. For pupils being taught in an English language school, we may not require a UKiset test.

We assess pupils from Year 3 onwards to make sure we can support their learning appropriately and fully. We offer a flexible approach to assessments, which can be taken with us at the school, online or at a local British Council centre.

English as an additional language

To ensure students can successfully access the St Margaret’s curriculum, international pupils may need to take one-to-one English as an additional language (EAL) lessons during their first term. Progress is carefully reviewed and lessons continue only as needed. There is an additional charge for EAL lessons.

Visas and guardianship

We are a licensed student sponsor and can provide the documentation families need to support visa applications. All overseas boarders must appoint a UK-based guardian, who plays an important role in ensuring both practical arrangements and pastoral care are in place throughout the year.

Fees

Our day and boarding fees reflect the outstanding teaching, pastoral care and opportunities offered at St Margaret’s Calne.
