Year 6 proved they’re ready to take the road as they cycled their way through a brilliant Bikeability course this week.

At the beginning of the course, pupils were at a mixture of abilities with their cycling from novice to more experienced bikers. Very quickly, the children learnt that good cycling is more than just being out on the roads as they had to perform a bike check and be ready for a cycle themselves.

On the first morning, they developed the skills of stopping safely and checking over the left shoulder before starting to move. This progressed to using hand indication to show intention to change direction. As well as practising their own skills they had to show awareness of cycling in a group.

On the quiet roads around school, skills were put into action, negotiating parked cars, T junctions and eventually roundabouts.

Year 6 Teachers, Miss Giles and Mrs Beach commented: “The pupils worked incredibly hard to achieve their Bikeability Levels, building both their cycling skills and confidence along the way. We’re really proud of them and hope they’ll continue to use these skills as they enjoy cycling safely and confidently in the future.”
